Getting your hair cut in Japan
Filed in Videos on Jul.11, 2009
at the local hair salon – Carriere – are fans of my blog and YouTube channel – so I questioned them if they want to be in a video with me. They said “mochiron.” The skit is meant to show that even with minimal Japanese you’ll still be able to get by – use the Japanese you know and you’ll be surprised how much English some shopkeepers and other folks know. Fumiko didn’t really know what I was going to say/do in the skit, so she did a pretty excellent job of being a Japanese person.
I really …

: ) I always delight in watching your videos Jason. I usually lurk and don’t comment much, but as I’ve studied japanese for years now and have been there 5 times, when I come back my japanese gets rusty and I miss my japanese friends. I like watching because I feel like I get connected to japan again even though I am so far away now. Thanks for posting!

Are you telling me, a person that has lived in Japan for 5 years, how to use the term gaijin?
I reckon you know that I did a whole video about the term “gaijin.”
I reckon by now I know when it’s appropriate to use gaijin vs gaikokujin.

haha – yeah, she seemed thrown by that question – oh well – not usually a problem with my hair.

yeah – I do that a small in class nowadays too – I have to remember to say things in English instead of Japanese.

We had a clean small store on Hirosaki Campus in 2004 where a haircut cost 1000 Yen… well, MY haircut cost 1000 Yen, because I usually ordered a plain 6 mm cut. More complicated stuff might be more expensive of course.
“Gaijin” is a somewhat derogatory term. Polite people say “Gaikokujin” really.
So they “paint” (?? = “kaku”) hair… fascinating, I didn’t know that.

you cant really say ‘chotto nagaku shite kudasai’… unless you want hair extensions!

Seems like there are certain pros of being an ALT in a smaller town over the huge cities. On an unrelated note, why are drawing vids “related videos” to this one?

wow I loved this video. I should have watched it sooner.

It lost the edge bc you kept slipping in too much japanese lol.

One of the best videos you’ve posted Jason. That I was able to know nearly everything said in Japanese was very cool as well. She reminds me quite a bit of my current Japanese teacher.
Getting a hair cut while in Japan was one of the things I was curious about, and it’s nice to know that my limited vocabulary is already sufficient to do so.

Fantastic Vid. I’m guessing if you want a more complicated hairstyle your going to need a picture. I have a hard time explaining what I want in English let alone in Japanese LOL.
